Post‑Natal & Postpartum Exercise Program

Why Postpartum Exercise Is Important

Postpartum exercise is about more than just “getting back in shape.” It helps restore strength, stability, and confidence after the major changes that occur during pregnancy and birth. Exercise supports recovery of posture, core and pelvic floor function, energy levels, and mental health. It also helps women gradually return to the physical demands of daily life, whether that’s lifting, carrying, or eventually getting back into structured training.

When Can You Start Exercising After Birth?

The timeline for returning to exercise is different for every woman. In the early weeks, a women’s health physiotherapist is best placed to guide pelvic floor and core recovery, and to address any birth-related injuries or complications.

As an Exercise Physiologist, my role usually begins after the 12-week mark, when your body has had time to heal and you’re ready to safely rebuild strength, fitness, and confidence. At this stage, we focus on gradual progression, taking into account your birth experience, pelvic floor health, breastfeeding status, sleep, and energy levels.

Our Phased Postpartum Exercise Approach

1

Phase 1 (0–12 weeks)

Led by your women’s health physiotherapist. Focus is on pelvic floor and deep core activation, breathing mechanics, gentle mobility, and basic daily function.

2

Phase 2 (12–24 weeks)

We progress to whole-body strength, postural correction, and low-impact cardiovascular exercise. The goal is to build resilience, reduce injury risk, and support energy for the demands of motherhood.

3

Phase 3 (6 months and beyond)

We continue to progress strength, stability, and fitness to help you return to higher-intensity training, running, or sport, always in a way that respects your recovery timeline and individual goals.
